ASE's Microlessons in Echocardiography & Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy
HCM is one of the most common inherited cardiomyopathies—however, the identification of patients with HCM can often pose a clinical challenge. This FREE online educational series, Microlessons in Echocardiography and Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM) includes 15 modules for just-in-time learning. These modules aim to explain what echocardiographic methods can help sonographers & physicians assess patients with HCM & determine treatment options.
NOTICE: Learners who completed the HCM Certificate of Completion Program cannot also claim CME credit this online course.

The American Society of Echocardiography is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Society of Echocardiography designates this activity for a maximum of 2.0 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)â„¢. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Successful completion of this CME activity, which includes participation in the evaluation component, enables the participant to earn MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) MOC program, and/or the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® or MOCA 2.0®. It is ASE’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM and ABP MOC points and/or ABA MOCA 2.0®. Physicians will earn MOC and/or MOCA 2.0 points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
ARDMS and CCI recognize ASE’s certificates and have agreed to honor the CME credit hours toward their registry requirements for sonographers.

Course/Activity Information

Learning Objectives:

  • Describe clinical history, symptoms, physical exam findings associated with HCM 
  • State the recommended frequency for performing echocardiograms in individuals with a confirmed diagnosis of HCM                                                                                 
  • State the recommended frequency for performing echocardiograms in individuals who are being screened for HCM based on a family history of the disease 
  • List at least three reasons why the cardiac wall might be thick (i.e. athletes heart, amyloid, HCM)     
  • Describe the difference in echocardiography findings for each condition being discussed (i.e. athletes heart, amyloid, HCM) 
  • Define HCM                                                                          
  • Describe who is at risk for HCM    
  • State why it is important to measure the wall thickness 
  • Describe common errors made when measuring the cardiac walls                                                                                
  • Describe two techniques to mitigate measurement error 
  • Describe the echocardiography measurements that should be used to assess function in HCM patients   
  • Describe specifically how strain is used to assess cardiac function in HCM patients
