eCASE Learning: Cardiac Shunts/Injuries

CASE, a global, open access online journal, welcomes case reports where cardiovascular ultrasound is used to diagnose or help solve a clinical problem. Examples include cases where cardiovascular ultrasound was used as a critical component of a multimodality approach to disease diagnosis or evaluation or where it was used to detect unusual or atypical disease manifestations. Case-based learning (CBL) is an established approach used across disciplines where learners apply their knowledge to real-world scenarios, promoting higher levels of cognition. Case-based learning (CBL) uses stories about individuals facing decisions or dilemmas. The eCASE Learning based series consists of four “cases” from CASE that are topic specific relevant to what our current members/learners are requesting more education about.

The American Society of Echocardiography is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
The American Society of Echocardiography designates this article for a maximum of 1.5 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.
Successful completion of this CME activity enables the participant to earn MOC points in the American Board of Internal Medicine’s (ABIM) Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program, the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP) MOC program, and/or the American Board of Anesthesiology’s (ABA) Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesiology Program® or MOCA 2.0®. It is ASE’s responsibility to submit participant completion information to ACCME for the purpose of granting ABIM and ABP MOC points and/or ABA MOCA 2.0®. Participants should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity. Physicians will earn MOC and/or MOCA 2.0 points equivalent to the amount of CME credits claimed for the activity.
ARDMS, CCI, and Sonography Canada recognize ASE’s certificates and have agreed to honor the CME credit hours toward their registry requirements for sonographers.

Course/Activity Information

Learning Objectives:

  1. Recognize where cardiac shunts are easy to overlook and the image acquisition techniques to help identify them.
  2. Review basic echocardiographic findings of cardiac shunts
  3. Identify various imaging techniques that help identify VSRs
  4. Review common echocardiographic findings in patients with AEF
  5. Understand the indication, limitation, and contraindication for diagnostic imaging approaches for AEF
  6. Recognize the specific echocardiographic maneuver that may help to diagnose the AEF post PVI.
  7. Recognize the etiologies of left atrial dissection.
  8. Review key clinical and imaging features of left atrial dissection.
  9. Highlight the diagnostic and prognostic roles of traditional and advanced imaging modalities in left atrial dissection
